George’s Corner – Happy Mother’s Day

A Mother’s Day reflection on the women who nurture others and the lasting impact compassionate care and companionship can have across generations.
Honoring the Women Who Nurture, Guide, and Care

May 10 is Mother’s Day, a time when many think fondly of their moms. However, if we are honest, we must admit that we have many other women in our lives who have radically impacted us. With that in mind, I thought it would be appropriate to celebrate all the women in our lives who were/are nurturers.

As a young child and adolescent, I was keenly aware of Miss Henrietta. She was a single, elderly woman who was one of my grandmother’s closest friends from church. Miss Henrietta had two younger brothers, one of whom died during the Second World War. Always smiling, she had the sweetest disposition and always had a kind word for all.

This dear lady had been an elementary school teacher for forty years. The thing she was most known for in her neighborhood, though, was her hospitality and care directed towards the children on her block. In the summer, Miss Henrietta often served sandwiches and juice to the youngsters in her area. Some were, or had been, students of hers, but not all. Many adults with families of their own recounted memories of eating baloney sandwiches in Miss Henrietta’s backyard or of consuming a nice frozen popsicle on a sweltering summer day on her front steps. She was greatly loved.

Miss Henrietta lived to be ninety-six years old! How many youngsters, some with a difficult home life, experienced a sense of peace and calm based on their interactions with this gentle, giving woman? There must have been one hundred or more over the decades. Miss Henrietta’s impact went far beyond her classroom.

So, let us take time to ponder the influence of the special women in our lives who “mothered” us in their own special ways. Maybe she was/is a sister, teacher, aunt, or neighbor. Whoever she may be, let us be grateful that she was placed in our path at just the perfect time in our life’s journey.
