Every year, millions of people attend Oktoberfest celebrations throughout the world. Originally begun in Bavaria to commemorate a royal wedding in 1810, Oktoberfest has changed and grown over the last two centuries.
Most connect Oktoberfest with partying, but early on it was a way for German people to celebrate a successful harvest. There was a joyful acknowledgment when the growing season was over, and the land earned rest for the winter.
This made me think of our senior citizens who have run the good race of life and now have earned rest from their labor.
Our lives are like the seasons. Spring is a time of birth and growth, summer is like the prime of life where we are flourishing, and autumn, like harvest time, is akin to our retirement years, where, like the earth, we earn a rest. As farmers look back over a successful harvest, we can look back over successful, productive lives once we reach the age of retirement. Whether it be our professions or seeing our children, grandchildren, or loved ones mature into adulthood, we all like to feel satisfied in a job well done.
The retirement years and elder care that Primacare Companions provides reminds me of a harvest story from the Navajo culture. In farming, Navajo people often refer to the Three Sisters. The Three Sisters are corn, beans, and squash. These three are always planted with one another because they work together in the soil. Corn stands tall and strong, beans climb the stalk and feed the soil, and squash spreads to protect the ground. The Navajo have a strong belief in working together, even planting crops that work in the same complementary manner.
Primacare Companions use the same principle.
Caregivers from Primacare work in tandem with our clients and their families to coordinate the best possible plan of care, just as The Three Sisters work together for the Navajo population.
When the harvest comes, the corn, beans, and squash, along with a few chilies and other spices, are used to make a very tasty stew. Three Sisters Stew combines the sweetness of the corn and squash and the earthiness of the beans. It is a perfect combination, just like the client, their families, and Primacare Companions.
Let us help you bring sweetness and balance to your life or the life of your loved one in their autumnal years.
