George’s Corner – November 2026

In George's Corner, Primacare Companions honors Veterans Day and Thanksgiving, expressing gratitude for our veterans and their service, sacrifice, and courage.
Honoring our veterans with gratitude this November at Primacare.

On November 11, we celebrate Veterans Day. Originally known as “Armistice Day,” the holiday commemorated the end of World War One when the armistice took effect at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918. Veterans’ organizations later urged Congress to recognize everyone who served in the military, whether during war or peacetime. In 1954, Congress passed, and President Eisenhower signed, legislation officially renaming the holiday Veterans Day.

Later in the month, we also celebrate Thanksgiving, where we often gather with friends or family to have a big feast, watch some football on TV, and consider all the things we are grateful for in our lives.

It is appropriate that these two holidays are in the same month, as we can both celebrate and be thankful for our veterans who served in the armed forces to protect our freedoms.

Many of us have loved ones through various generations who have served in the military. Often, these individuals have served and have not really spoken about their military service or have reflected upon their service and talked about their experiences with the utmost humility. A friend whose father passed away recently at 102 years of age, only learned of some of his dad’s awards and medals after his passing. His father never really spoke much about his service, though he was a medic who was in Normandy on D-Day!

While veterans have access to many avenues of care through the Veterans Administration, we all know that care provided in one’s home is always preferable to any facility.

Through the years, Primacare Companions have assisted several veterans. Those who have been in the military certainly deserve the best possible care as our vets face the consequences of aging and ill health. We all deserve to live with dignity and respect as human beings, but our veterans are a special class of individuals.

For many years, I was a civil servant, working for the Defense Commissary Agency, which was responsible for keeping our military grocery stores stocked across the world. The agency’s motto was, “Serving the Most Deserving.” This slogan conveyed the feeling that we gladly serve our military members and their families because of the sacrifice they have made to our country. At Primacare Companions, we similarly look at our clients who are veterans. Those who sacrifice for our country spend a lot of time separated from family and loved ones. That is something many of us have not had to do in our work careers. Simply based on the many ways our veterans have served our nation, Primacare Companions consider it an honor to provide home health care for veterans and their families. Our veterans deserve the best care that we have to offer.

So from the Primacare family to yours, Happy Veterans Day and Happy Thanksgiving!
