This month, America celebrates its 250th anniversary of independence from Great Britain. Colonists at that time yearned for freedom to determine their own life’s course. They didn’t want Mother England to be in charge. Even today, we bristle at our tax bills and having to abide by laws that we feel are unjust. We as human beings just do not like to be told what to do.
As we journey through our own lives, we also yearn for independence. We look forward to the age when we move out of our parent’s home and make a go of it on our own. As children, we need to be looked after and cared for, but after adolescence we are hit with a desire to find our own way. It is natural.
Now, granted once we are on our own and we begin to pay our bills, prepare our own meals and wash our own clothes, we might miss being in our parents’ care. However, when we begin to transition into adulthood and take on responsibility for our own well-being, we often swell with pride and a feeling of accomplishment.
So, when we or a loved one age and reach the point where help is needed taking care of finances, cleaning the house or doing other tasks that we once did for ourselves without thinking, it is difficult emotionally. The loss of independence is one of the most challenging aspects of aging.
Though the loss of independence is hard, it is still very much a fact and a stage we all must be prepared to face. Losing one’s independence does not mean one has to give up experiencing life’s simple pleasures or the ability to take care of necessary tasks.
Primacare Companions can step into those gaps by helping with accompaniment to appointments and doing light housework in addition to fulfilling other caregiving needs. When doing things for oneself becomes a bit challenging, Primacare Companions can assist with and make the transition to a less independent lifestyle easier for our clients.
